A downlight with built-in voice control by Amazon’s Alexa has been unveiled by Eaton.

The Home Voice light gives information and control over more than just illumination. ‘With Alexa built-in, you can control smart home devices, hear the news, access tens of thousands of skills, and more – hands-free,’ said Pete Thompson, vice president, Alexa Voice Service.

While Alexa is becoming increasingly common for lighting control in the residential sector,  this is one of the first luminaires to have the voice-control assistant completely built into a standard-sized unit.

It constantly listens for voice commands, even when the LED isn’t illuminated.

Users can set up the recessed light by using the Halo Home app, and then configure the voice settings using the Halo Voice app for iOS or Android.

The Home Voice unit is the latest in the company’s Halo Home Smart Lighting System system, allows dimming, white tuning, grouping, scheduling and scene setting.

‘We’re proud to deliver this cutting-edge solution,’ Eaton Lighting’s chief technology officer Parth Joshi told Lux. ‘Our customers are embracing hands-free technology so combining Alexa with Eaton’s industry-leading lighting products enables customers to have their favourite voice service on hand and ready to help, anywhere, in any room.’

Currently the unit is available in the USA, but is expected to ship to European and other markets in due course.

The first  LED downlight to feature the Amazon Alexa voice service in a single ceiling light fixture is believed to be the AI from Juno, which was unveiled in January this year.
