Niagara Falls Illuminated with LEDs

December 14, 2016

On December 1, 2016 Niagara Falls unveiled it’s new lighting display powered by LED lights.  The new LEDs replace the previous Xenon searchlights that have been in place for almost 20 years.

The 21 Xenon searchlights (some of which have been in place since post World War II), were replaced by 14,000 luminaires.  These luminaires are grouped across both falls in 350 zones, with each zone comprised of white, green, blue and red LEDs.  When combined, these colors can create some breathtaking visual displays.  Depending on the colors being used, the new lights are up to 14 times brighter than the previous lighting.

Energy consumption with the new LEDs decreased 60% compared to the previous lighting.  In addition, the LED lights are virtually maintenance free and will last approximately 25 years.  Compared to the 1,900 hours with the previous lighting, the savings will continue.
